Crane Rentals, Warehouse and Logistics

The History of Thackray Crane Rental and Lincoln Financial Field

As loyal football fans of the Philadelphia Eagles, we here at Thackray Crane Rental, Inc cannot overstate how truly proud we are to be affiliated with SportsRadio 94WIP, home of the Eagles Radio Network. As loyal Eagles’ fan for decades now, we feel such a strong, personal connection to our hometown team. In honor of our partnership with the Eagles Radio Network, we wanted to revisit our own professional history with the sports team—stretching as far back as 2001, and our involvement in the construction of Lincoln Financial Field.

A Decade of Negotiations

While some Philadelphians call the former U.S. capital, “Philly,” equal proportions of Eagles fans call Lincoln Financial Field, “The Linc.” Regardless, anyone who can remember the old Veterans Stadium will undoubtedly agree that “The Linc” is vastly superior, where football stadiums are concerned. Back in those days, the Veterans Stadium acted as both baseball and football field. It wasn’t until the venerable 1990s that anyone started talking about the possibility of a new stadium. Part of the reasoning for negotiations was the reputation of the Veteran Stadiums itself—ranked as one of the worst venues in the NFL.

The owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, Norman Braman, aspired to commission a stadium worthy of his city and his team. Too frustrated by constraints and a severe lack of financial support, Braman sold the Eagles to Jeffrey Lurie. Over the next six years, Lurie passionately pleaded his case to the state of Philadelphia. In 1999, the state approved funding, realizing the vision. By December of 2000, the deal was struck between the City of Philadelphia and the Eagles, agreeing on the construction of what would be Lincoln Financial Field.

Thackray Crane Rental and the Eagles

Having been in business since the 1947, Thackray Crane Rental Inc. had solidified its status in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland, and Delaware, as the premier crane provider in the region. When the substantial project commenced in 2001 to construct the new 69,000 seat stadium, Thackray Crane Rental was involved in lifting the structural steel used to fabricate the immense building. With our fleet of cranes spread across the Philadelphia, PA, region we were proud to partake in the construction of Lincoln Financial Field.

The rest, as they say, is history.
