Cooling Tower Replacement
PHILADELPHIA, PA
Project Overview
Thackray Crane deployed a 500-ton Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 in Center City Philadelphia to support a critical cooling tower replacement project in a dense urban environment. While most people only see the crane during the final lift, the true complexity of the project involved the extensive planning, logistics, transportation, assembly, and coordination required long before lifting operations could begin.
The project highlighted Thackray Crane’s ability to execute highly technical heavy lifting operations in active city environments where space constraints, underground infrastructure, permitting, and public safety all play a major role in project success.
The Challenge
Operating a 500-ton crane in the middle of Center City Philadelphia required far more than simply transporting equipment to the site. The project demanded a carefully orchestrated setup process involving multiple phases of planning and onsite coordination.
Several major challenges had to be addressed, including:
- Limited space for crane assembly and staging
- Coordinating operations within an active urban environment
- Managing street closures and city permits
- Transporting and installing massive counterweight systems
- Evaluating underground infrastructure beneath the jobsite
- Maintaining safe operations above active subway tunnels
- Configuring the crane for heavy lifting in a tight footprint
The project site introduced additional engineering considerations due to active subway operations directly beneath the crane setup area. Ground pressure, outrigger placement, and total crane weight distribution all had to be carefully analyzed before assembly could begin.
The Solution
Thackray Crane developed and executed a detailed lift and assembly strategy tailored specifically to the conditions of the Philadelphia jobsite.
The operation involved transporting multiple crane components, counterweights, rigging equipment, and support materials separately before assembling the crane onsite. The team coordinated every phase of the setup process, including permitting, traffic control logistics, ballast installation, crane configuration, and final lift preparation.
Using the Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1, Thackray Crane was able to provide the lifting capacity, reach, and stability necessary for the cooling tower replacement while operating within the limitations of a dense city environment.
The project also demonstrated the importance of experienced operators, certified rigging personnel, and detailed pre-lift planning when handling major infrastructure and mechanical replacement work in urban settings.
The Result
The crane assembly and lifting operation were successfully completed while maintaining safe and efficient jobsite operations throughout the project timeline.
Despite the logistical complexity of assembling and operating a 500-ton crane in the middle of Philadelphia, the project was completed efficiently through careful coordination and expert execution.
The project further reinforced Thackray Crane’s reputation for handling highly specialized heavy lifting operations throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware — including infrastructure projects, HVAC replacements, industrial lifts, healthcare facility work, and large-scale urban construction support.
