Thackray Crane was proud to support the latest phase in the historic restoration of Our Mother of Consolation School, a beloved landmark in Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood. In this third phase of an ongoing preservation effort, our team was tasked with one of the most visually striking and technically delicate components to date—lifting and setting the school’s cupola and cross.

Precision Planning for a Historic Lift
Before any equipment hit the site, Thackray Crane performed a detailed pre-job walkthrough to assess the terrain, evaluate the structural layout, and determine the optimal setup location for the crane. These early-stage decisions were critical in ensuring maximum efficiency and the highest level of safety for the team and surrounding community.

Equipment That Delivers
For this operation, we deployed the 75-ton Tadano ATF 70G-4, an all-terrain crane chosen for its reach, mobility, and load-handling capabilities. The setup also included the delivery of counterweights and a man-basket, allowing our crew to work safely at elevation while guiding the cupola and cross into place.

Expert Execution
This job demanded more than just muscle—it required finesse. Leading the lift was Operator Walt Quinn, supported by Oiler Celeste Sanchez, whose skill and precision ensured a smooth, stable operation from start to finish. With their guidance, the crane crew successfully installed the architectural features, contributing to the restoration of a historic structure and a symbol of community pride.
