Importance of Safety for Crane Operators
At Thackray Crane Rental, Inc., there’s nothing more important than the safety of our operators and our customers! We ensure safety by consistently training our certified crane operators and implementing a company policy with safety regimes and seminars. This summer, we held our 7th annual safety meeting with over 85 of our employees in attendance. The high attendance number indicates our employees’ eager willingness to become informed of the latest news and developments in industry safety.
Our safety meeting involved an engaging agenda with a variety of speakers, notably including SportsRadio 94WIP’s Big Daddy Graham. Evening topics covered a range of safety initiatives. Thackray Crane Rental’s Operations Safety Director Mark W. Thackray offered a welcoming introduction of additional guest speakers, who provided commentary on the following safety topics:
- Dan Kane, Director of Safety Services at Diamond Tool, who elaborated on fall protection equipment, specifically safety harnesses.
- Deane Smith, Founder of Safety at South Jersey, who discussed wind load evaluations.
- Joe Doerr and John Schoppert, Risk Manager and Loss Control Manager at NationsBuilders Insurance Services (NBIS), who summarized new mobile equipment training that will launch this fall for our certified operators.
As a renowned radio and television personality, comedian and writer, Graham delivered a number of inevitable jokes, but also offered motivating words of wisdom for the meeting’s attendees. Recalling his successful battle with throat cancer, he felt fortunate to have caught it early on and encouraged everyone to always trust one’s instinct when it comes to personal health and well-being. Both his lighthearted humor and sage advice were very well received by the entire audience.
Mark W. Thackray remarked positively about the company’s measurable improvement in safety statistics in the last year, which is a testament to the collaboration between employees and our company’s safety team. He also suggested tips on driver safety, recommended guidelines for spiral roll cages, and reviewed ladder basics.
In regard to safety, when it comes to each unique job site, our crane operators must review a checklist of job conditions and assess equipment to effectively operate their crane. Important considerations include ground and weather conditions, as well as potential hazards to avoid. Through experience and training, Thackray’s operators are instructed on how to identify critical factors to best avoid issues.
